More in fantastically belated NYFW photos from mystery film found at the bottom of my backpack: Tanya Taylor!
OOPS, it took me two months to get my film from NYFW developed. But that’s okay! It’s like a nice little mid-April surprise! Right? And then they screwed up scanning my negatives and I ended up with some of these weird little diptychs, but whatever, it worked out nicely.
First: Gretchen Jones FW2012.
It is REALLY SUPER IMPORTANT that this (internet/dekstop-printed one-strap mini) dress is one day mine, and the second Fatal or whoever gets it in stock I am buying this shit like it’s my job. We could talk about the rest of the hilarity/awesomeness/fun-ness that was that whole collection too, but I mean, you’re logged into Tumblr already, and I think that’s basically all you need to know.
I guess “witchy ballerina vibes” is kind of a thing I get behind once in a while?
shirt free people
skirt zara
boots surface to air
We’re going to take a moment for a highly political interlude and talk about the fact that, like, legalization of gay marriage on a federal level is obviously necessary due to the fact that when the hell else would I ever get to wear this entire situation? Like, from the lipstick to the jacket to the pleated half-sheer maxi skirt gown thing and all. Unless “motorcycle bride with vampire makeup” is a thing I can rock on a daily basis, which I guess I might have to start doing.
In further complications, it turns out that this thing of glory and all the other things of glory above are in fact from the AW2012 show of Christian Siriano, who has not once ever made a thing unruffled enough for me to be interested in it putting on my body, and then this happened. I’m totally stealing this one-liner from Hilary since she said it earlier before and I laughed so hard I spat my lunch out on my computer because I am A Classy Lady, but so many of those jackets and sheer things and boots and all of it are — dare we say it? — fierce.
tee that sharpied YSL thing I made and can never take off
skirt from urban a billion years ago, whateva
hat also have been wearing it for months, oops
creepers underground, which I also wear constantly
OUTFIT POST OVERLOAD CONTINUES. But seriously: I told y’all I was dressing super chill all week. None of this is even new — see all those links to the times you’ve seen it all before — which I think is probably some sort of NYFW crime. Oops! Plus, how great does my awesomely dirty hallway look? Way too cold and dark for the roof still!
What you can’t see here though is how snazzy I did my nails this week — a dull khaki green with orangey-pink stripes randomly on some of the nails:

aaaaaand the latest permutation of the various shades of blonde-silver-purple-grey of my Mermaid Hair Manic Panic Adventures:

In entirely unrelated material, I leave you with Werner Herzog reading Where’s Waldo, in case you had forgotten this existed or not yet encountered it, as well as…. snowtoro!
dress complex geometries
boots h+m (the lisbeth salander collection, don’t tell anyone i bought them. i’ve superglued the wedges back on to the boot body twice now, ughck)
NYFW DAY 1 (TUESDAY) a.k.a. 2K9/10 fashungoth throwback vibez a.k.a. “this dress is honestly the most comfortable thing I own and my almost-stylish equivalent of wearing pajamas to work,” since I can’t imagine anything more comfortable than a giant hooded sack of uber-soft worn-in jersey that I’ve been wearing a few times a month since I first got it. Totally fine with that.
This NYFW is the first one in a while where I opted not to have any responsibilities for other publications, which has honestly been kind of nice: I’ve wandered around to a few things, gone to all the shows I’ve been somehow involved with, but mostly I’ve been hella laid back instead of frantically cabbing it back and forth from Milk to Lincoln Center fourteen times a day. And rather than shooting 400 photos per hour on my digital camera, I’ve been shooting film, which is kind of awesome and a totally different approach than the OMFG PUT IT ON TWITTER RIGHT NOW steeze I’ve gotten so used to. (So you’ll see the best of them once I develop it all next week!) I guess I’ve been dressing lazier too, or at least just more like myself: all the silly hats and polka dot suits and Litas galore running around Soho are great and all, but I feel way better in my worn-in favourites and go-to basics topped off with my epic leopard coat.
NYFW SS2102 // KAELEN PRESENTATION + BACKSTAGE
Inkblot digital prints (made from paintings made by one of Kaelen’s friends), macrame, sheers, and tonal beige, seafoam, taupe, and pale orange pulled together a gorgeous slouchy and ethereal collection at Kaelen. I loved the shoes (a collab with Coclico) and those intricate knits, but obviously it’s that printed bias-cut slightly-asymmetrical column maxi and the eerie pale eyeshadow that have stolen my heart.
NYFW SS2012 // GRAEME ARMOUR
Cutouts! Sheer blacks! Black and white with a few pops of candy pink at the end! Mixed textures and slashed satin! Formal baseball hats! None of it seemed really new, and at a few distressing moments verged on (quelle horreur!) “looking kind of like Alex Wang,” but still — I wanted plenty of it. Those pink biker jackets, the leather crop halter and that clownish tie button down shirt? Yes please.
Makeup at Faster by Mark Fast — obviously, I’m obsessed. (Photo yanked from the lovely Nicolette’s blog!)
NYFW SS2012: SOBOTKA
Sobotka presentation at the Jane: Prints! More prints! Though that was to be expected. But still! More flowy gauze chiffon things that are super girly but kind of weird and creepy and sort of punk and sort of street and those shoes with those dresses oh my god why don’t I own plaid trousers to wear with a crop top like that and can I have pink eyebrows and braids in my frizzy hair and little socks and a chiffon tail cape thing permanently attached to everything I wear ever like that too? OK, cool.
NYFW SS2012: GRETCHEN JONES
We have discussed my ever-growing obsession with crazy acid bright digital prints, yes? We have also discussed how I work with a bunch of really amazing people, and one of them is Gretchen Jones, who aside from making awesome things is also one of the nicest humans ever? Yes, okay. So it’s already obvious then that I was way psyched on Gretchen’s presentation yesterday, but I’m going to tell you about it anyway.
The presentation was staged as a police lineup, with twenty numbered near-identical blonde models stepping forward when their number was barked over a loudspeaker. I love the layering of the same piece in different colours and the fact that so many of the pieces are convertible and can be worn in different ways, but my favourite part is the fabric (and that’s not just because I saw the prints go from computer screen to swatch to dress over the past few months, I swear!) The blue one on that mermaid maxi skirt (think we know what I’ll be buying here) is actually the 2012 lunar cycle superimposed over the ocean, and the one that looks like a brown floral or prisms is actually a kaleidescope-type print of horses like the background of her website. Makeup was kept simple except for a bright raspberry lip from OCC Lip Tar and the braids made me anxious for my hair to grow out more.
HELLO FRIENDS! I need to ask you a favor.
It is fashion week here in New York again! Again! It never stops! Every time I try to come up with some like, witty conceptual post or whatever instead of admitting to the fact that I’m just going to spend the next week running around in offensive shoes grabbing up all the free drinks my grubby little hands can find and then leaning disaffectedly against every wall I can find for some charming problem-tennis banter about whose jobs or editors or whatever are just more stressful or whatever it is we actually do all week, but it is not an easy thing to do!
Of course we can expect a flurry of posts of photos of shows and wacky outfits and Internet Blog Friends Who Are Now IRL Friends and everything! But also! It seems like another kind of fashion week feature might be nice here.
I am sure we have all noticed by now that most fashion bloggers are, you know, Beautiful Skinny Straight White Girls With Bottomless Bank Accounts And Access To Very Lovely Things. Which I suspect may not always line up with, you know, People Who Are Interested In Fashion In General. This isn’t to say that the skinny girls who can afford all that Proenza or whatever aren’t lovely and talented and stylish and brilliant people whose blogs I read all the time! Many of them deserve every last bit of attention and free stuff and internet love that they get, because they are amazing!
But I know there are surely TONS of other fabulous fashion and style blogs out there who get a little less mainstream attention for whatever reasons — that the writers are people of colour, or are less wealthy and making most of their own clothes, or are queer, or are visibly queer, or are trans ladies or trans men, or are stylish curvy ladies, or maybe have some kind of disability, or maybe have survived something which provides them with unique perspective, or maybe are Muslim ladies who choose to dress modestly and have killer style, or maybe are just people who are older than 30.
And I get so many questions and emails asking about them! So many! It is amazing how many people ask me if I can recommend any fashion and style blogs like that! Because you guys are awesome, and because it’s true, it is frustratingly hard to find inspiration from anyone who is somehow a little bit outside the arbitrary media-prescribed norm, people who are stylish and love fashion even though everyone else often seems to (wrongly) suggest that fashion just isn’t meant for them.
The point is: I feel bummed that I don’t have a great list somewhere to immediately direct questioners to and also to highlight the amazingness of all these people whose amazingness may not get highlighted as often as it ought to. Which is why I’m asking for your input! I was super psyched to be included in Threadbared’s list of queer fashion bloggers last year — and I want to compile something like that here, but beyond just queer (though obviously queer blogs are to be included.)
SO! What are the other blogs you read and love that fall a little outside of whatever is dictated as normative by fashion, people who are super talented but aren’t as likely to get featured by Refinery29 as the next big style blogger or whatever? Go to town, kids. Link everything you want in the comments and I’ll compile them into my own list here sometime in the next week, since I think all of our Google Reader lists could probably use a fashion week makeover.

Finally finishing up all things post-NYFW! More of my reviews at Oakazine….
And, at long last, images from the Mandy Coon presentation — more after the jump.
